History: St. Mark’s is one of the descendents of Trinity Lutheran. They branched off and built their own building in 1890, the same year the congregation was formed. The building underwent significant renovations in 1977, as new space was created surrounding the original structure, mostly for educational purposes.
Congregation/Space: St. Mark’s building is a large brick building with many facilities including a main sanctuary space with a free-standing altar in a wide, airy chancel that extends almost the whole width of the nave. A large abstract stained glass piece on the chancel window depicts “All the saints of all ages and places sweep from the right and left corners of the chancel in a procession to worship the Risen Christ in the center”. Much thought went into the renovations done to the building, and the pastor at the time, Pastor Paul Feil, played a huge role in designing the meaningful structures and decor we see today, many of which came from his own endeavors in Japan. The building contains several open gathering spaces, offices, classrooms, and a library. St. Mark’s congregation shares various parts of the building with several groups including a baptist congregation called New Beginnings, a Hispanic Pentecostal congregation, Iglesia Vision Celestial, Western Berks Mission District, Path of Holiness, and an AA group called “Mustard Seed” meets here.
